History
Limuru Dairy Farmers Co-operative Society was officially registered under the Co-operative Act on 28th April 1962 and began operations in March 1963 with only seven pioneering members. Nestled in the central highlands of Kenya — Limuru sub-county, Kiambu — the area is renowned for producing rich, natural, high-quality milk.
Membership grew steadily, reaching 76 farmers and establishing the first milk collection center, now known as Route 1. That same year, UNICEF supported the society with additional milk cans to boost capacity.
In 1964, the management opened a farm inputs store, supplying feeds and milk cans at fair prices, shielding farmers from the exploitative rates charged by private traders.
Key milestones soon followed:
-
- 1967 – The society purchased its first parcel of land and acquired its first vehicle.
- 1984–1986 – Construction of the society’s headquarters, the iconic Maziwa House, a four-story building, was completed.
- 1987 – With member and government approval, the society launched Artificial Insemination (AI) and clinical services to enhance herd productivity and farmer support.
- 1997 – The society ventured into milk processing under the flagship brand Limuru Fresh, marking its entry into value addition.
From a modest beginning, Limuru Dairy Farmers Co-operative Society has grown into a strong farmer-owned institution — continually investing in innovation, infrastructure, and services that uplift its members and the wider community.
